The Events and Tourism students from the University of Lincoln received a treat on Halloween this year in the form of guest speaker Alexia Hargrave. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students enjoyed watching the Programme Leader for BSc (hons) Events Management, Hanya Pielichaty interview Alexia in front of a 100+ strong crowd in the Cargill Lecture theatre. Alexia is renowned for her management and execution of high profile and special events delivered under the umbrella of Alexia & Suns. Alexia founded Alexia & Suns in the midst of a global recession but grit, determination and innovation ensured that it would be a success http://www.alexiaandsuns.com/. Alexia worked at Virgin Group for 13 years, seven of which as Sir Richard Branson’s PA. An experience which she considers paramount to her understanding of relationship building, project planning and positivity.

Alexia is not a stranger to having her events feature on the front cover of Hello! or indeed receiving high praise from celebrity icons. A few of events Alexia has organised include both Sam and Holly Branson’s wedding http://www.hellomagazine.com/celebrities/201201026871/exclusive-holly-branson-island-wedding/ and the tennis tournament on Necker Island, aka the Necker Cup http://neckercup.com/. Her approach to both her events and indeed life was insightful and inspirational for students at Lincoln. Alexia discussed the need to maintain high levels of professionalism and courtesy in all situations and an ability to be flexible if things do not go to plan. The students learnt that self-belief, a healthy lifestyle and an ‘go get em’ attitude are some of the key traits to success.

Through the interview with Alexia it became clear that life is there for the taking and Alexia has not relented in grasping at new and exciting opportunities. An awe-inspiring talk by an awe-inspiring woman. Alexia’s talk may have only lasted one hour in duration but the messages within the talk will stay with students for many years to come.
