On Wednesday 26th April, 2017, over 45 participants gathered together here at the Lincoln International Business School, University of Lincoln for the 2nd edition of the Tourism Research Network (TouRNet) PhD/ECR Symposium 2017. The symposium was convened by Dr. Emmanuel Adu-Ampong, a Lecturer in Tourism Management with the Tourism and Events Team. The day was packed with student presentations and four professional development workshops that were delivered and led by seasoned and early career academics including our own Professor David Charles, Professor Heather Hughes, Dr. Agnieszka Rydzik, and Dr. Deirdre Anderson all in the Lincoln International Business School. Financial support for the Symposium came mainly from the Northern Advanced Research Training Institute (NARTI) and the Lincoln International Business School.

The 2017 Symposium goes down as a very excellent day of presentations and programme that was well received and appreciated by all attendees. Some of the feedback received included the following:

The workshops were enlightening and informative

Very student friendly conference – I felt confident about presenting my work

Networking – I’ve met so many interesting people

The pre-dinner get together was an excellent way to get both the delegates and facilitators to forge an amiable and cordial professional interpersonal relations

The entire programme was very well coordinated and executed

Workshops were really useful but I also enjoyed presentations

Great chance for meeting other students and hearing their research/journey

Networking exercise good fun

Great size for networking, and right balance of session time and social time. Well organised.

The overall day was really enjoyable! Looking forward to next year.

Based on the feedback received, it looks like extending the symposium over more than a day will be a welcome addition to the format. We might incorporate this suggestion into the 2018 Symposium.
